Reimagine AI – March Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the March edition of Reimagine AI.
Artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, infrastructure, and public policy. This month we look at three developments shaping the future of AI: debates about military use, the rapid expansion of data centers, and opportunities to begin learning AI skills.
At Reimagine AI, our goal isn’t to hype AI or dismiss its challenges. It’s to help people understand its implications in practical, human terms — how AI is impacting our lives and how it can support careers, including opportunities for new and small businesses.
In the News: AI, Government, and Military Use
Two major artificial intelligence companies—OpenAI and Anthropic—are currently involved in an important debate with the United States Department of Defense over how artificial intelligence should be used in military systems.
At the center of the discussion is a key question: How much control should private companies have over how their AI technology is used by governments?
Anthropic’s Position
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has chosen to keep strict limits—often called “red lines”—in the company’s contracts. These limits prevent its AI system, Claude, from being used for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons systems.
Government Response
Following this decision, the Trump Administration labeled Anthropic a potential “supply chain risk” and restricted the use of its technology within government systems. Anthropic has since filed federal lawsuits challenging the decision.
OpenAI’s Agreement
Meanwhile, OpenAI signed a $200 million agreement with the Pentagon to provide AI technology for use on classified networks. CEO Sam Altman has stated that the company will maintain similar ethical safeguards, although some observers believe the agreement allows broader government use.
Why it matters
As artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, governments and technology companies are still working to define where ethical limits should exist and who decides them. These decisions may shape how AI is used in national security for many years to come.
Infrastructure: The Data Centers Powering AI
Artificial intelligence may seem invisible, but behind every AI tool are large data centers filled with powerful computers. These facilities store data, train AI models, and deliver the computing power that makes modern AI possible.
As of 2026, the United States has hundreds of operating data centers, with many more planned in the coming years. Please see source US Data Center Map - Project List & Tracker
Several regions have become especially important for AI infrastructure:
Northern Virginia - Often called “Data Center Alley,” this region contains the largest concentration of data centers in the world.
Ohio and Georgia - These states are becoming major development hubs because they offer reliable electricity and faster permitting for large technology campuses.
Texas - Texas is one of the fastest-growing markets for new data centers and AI infrastructure.
AI in Plain English
What is a Data Center?
A data center is a large building filled with powerful computers that store, process, and deliver the information we use every day.
When you:
• send an email
• stream a movie
• store files online
• use an AI tool
your request travels to a data center where computers process the information and send the answer back to you.
Artificial intelligence requires enormous computing power, which is why companies are building more data centers across the country.
Data centers are the factories that power the digital economy.
